COCOA BEACH, Florida -- The Cocoa Beach City Commission voted 4-1 to approve an ordinance regulating the sale of medical marijuana within the city limits as a proactive measure in case the Florida Right to Medical Marijuana Initiative, known as Amendment 2, passes in November.
Nearly all of the residents who spoke at the meeting were against passage of the ordinance.
"One of our most important jobs sitting up here as Commissioners is to plan for the future," Commissioner Skip Williams said in response to the residents' criticism.
Commissioner Ben Malik, the sole no vote, said that he would rather the City just "tweak the signage" rather than zoning areas for medical marijuana dispensaries.
The ordinance allows marijuana dispensaries and medical marijuana treatment centers to be located in only two areas - near the Cocoa Beach Pier and Ron Jon Surf Shop.
