Brevard County May Buy Mr. Ni's Restaurant

MERRITT ISLAND, Florida -- Brevard County could buy the former Mr. NI's Chinese restaurant located off the southwest off-ramp from State Road 528 to State Road 3 (Courtney Parkway) on Merritt Island.  A proposed purchase price of $259,000 will be considered by the Brevard County Commission at the Tuesday, March 4, 2014 Commission meeting.

The property is next to the Brevard County Government Complex and the County staff proposes to use the additional land for overflow parking to that Complex.  The Florida Department of Transportation may later acquire the property from the County for future improvements to either SR 528 or 3.

According to documents filed with the County Commission, the property was once a gas station where two 4,500 gallon underground storage tanks were left abandoned and ground contamination was discovered in 2006.  If the County does purchase the property, taxpayers could be on the hook for costly, undiscovered environmental hazard cleanup.

The County plans to further investigate the full extent of the environmental hazards before closing on the property, if approved by the Commission.

The property is currently owned by Bayview Loan Servicing, L.L.C. based in Coral Gables, Florida.


UPDATE: The County Commission voted 4-1 in favor of purchasing the property with Commissioner Trudie Infantini voting no.
