WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The U.S. Senate is debating a compromise bill to avert a continuing federal government shutdown and whether to, once again, raise the U.S. debt ceiling.

Regardless of the votes reached by the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives would also have to reach a similar compromise to end the government shutdown.
