Record Number of Households on Food Stamps
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- According
to
the
latest U.S. Department of Agricultural report released this week, the number of U.S. households in the Supplemental
Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP or
also referred to as Food Stamps) hit an all-time record high of 23,017,768 households
for the month of November 2012.
Nationally, the average per person Food Stamp benefit also reached an all time high of $135.72 for 47,692,896 Americans with a record-breaking total cost of $6,472,852,004 in the month of November 2012.
The number of Floridians on food stamps rose 8.6% from a year ago to 3,541,637 for the month of November 2012.
There were about 32 million
Americans on Food Stamps when President Barack Obama began his first term in office in
January 2009.
