Wayne Ivey Sworn In As Brevard County Sheriff

Wayne Ivey
COCOA, Florida -- Brevard County has a new sheriff in town.  Brevard County Sheriff-elect Wayne Ivey is now Brevard's new sheriff after being sworn in tonight at Brevard Community College’s Cocoa campus.

UPDATE: Ivey Sworn in as Sheriff

Text of Sheriff Ivey's speech follows:

First, I would like to thank each of you and your families for attending tonight's ceremony.  I would also like to thank Dr. Richey and the Brevard Community College for allowing us to utilize the Simpkins Center for tonight's event.  I would be remiss if I did not also thank Assistant Vice President John Glisch of BCC as well as Lindsey Deaton, Becky Moore, Cheryl Sink, Katrina Wilson, and Jean Palmer all of whom worked to make tonight possible.

I want to thank my family for all of their support through the years.  My mom and dad who are here with me tonight and my mother in father in law who are also with us as well.

My brother Arthur who has been my life long idol and friend!

My children Robert, Janna, Matthew, and Michael who I am so extremely proud of and my beautiful wife Susan who took care of our family, stood beside me, and gave me this chance to pursue my dream and goals.

I want to thank Sheriff Jack Parker and his family for not only giving me this opportunity to serve the citizens of Brevard County but for also giving me the honor of having him swear me in as we embark on this incredible journey.

Today, my job is to start to follow in the footsteps of Sheriff Parker, a man I believe is one of the greatest Sheriffs ever to serve our country.  While that job is tough enough my goal is even tougher.  My goal is to live up to and exceed Sheriff Parker's expectations while serving the citizens of Brevard County.

For over thirty years Sheriff Parker has proudly worn a uniform that is symbolic of his passion and pride for Brevard County. Tonight on behalf of the Brevard County Commissioners and citizens of Brevard County, Chairman Andy Anderson would like to present Sheriff Parker with a keepsake that will forever memorialize his incredible service to our Thank You Sheriff Parker For All You Have Done for Brevard County.

At this time, it is my honor to swear in the members of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office that are present in the audience.   I would like to start with Doug Waller who will now serve as our Chief Deputy.

Doug has served with the Brevard County Sheriffs Office for almost 27 years.  He has served as a Deputy, Sgt., Lt., and most recently Commander of Criminal Investigations. At this time I would like to ask Doug and his family to come forward and be sworn in.

It is now my honor to swear in the members of our Command Team that are present tonight.  The members of our Command Team are second to none and are one of the many reasons this agency functions at an amazing level.  Members of Command please rise and take the Oath of Office.

And now it is my extreme honor to swear in the men, women, and K-9's of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office that are present in the audience.  These members are truly the backbone of this agency and without each and everyone of them we would not be as successful!!

Our jobs as law enforcement officers empower us at many levels but none more important than the authority we are given to change lives.

If you stop to consider that our jobs may require us to take someone's life or take away someone's freedom you immediately recognize the authority this job brings with it.

But I believe it is most important to recognize the opportunities and abilities this job gives us. The ability to save lives, to protect citizens, and forever impact life in a positive way.

If you imagine for a moment the range of abilities possessed by those who serve our community, one can clearly see why each of you are here tonight.

We all strongly believe it is a privilege to be a member of this agency and this proud profession.  We all understand the importance of not only what we do but how we do it.

It was once said that. "Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear."

I can honestly tell you that the men and women of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office serve with a level of pride that is unmatched and unparalleled.  They are the reason this agency is considered the best in the state of Florida and I can't wait to become a part of their team.

I am truly honored you have chosen me to serve as Brevard's next Sheriff and to serve alongside the men and women of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office who protect our county each and everyday. It is said that crime will rise to the level we will tolerate...  I can assure you that the Brevard County Sheriff's Office will have a very low tolerance for crime!!

On behalf of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office thank you for attending tonight and for everything you do to support our agency!!
