Westboro Baptist Church: "God Sent The Shooter"
The Westboro Baptist Church, known for protesting military funerals, has once again stirred controversy following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Fashion Island in Newtown, Connecticut, on Friday.
The Westboro Baptist Church published on its website that: "God sent the shooter to Newtown, CT. "Shall there be evil in a city, and
the Lord hath not done it?" Amos 3:6. He is punishing you for your sins
against Him (e.g., fag marriage)."
One of the groups organizers, Shirley Phelps-Roper, announced on her Twitter account that "Westboro will picket Sandy Hook Elementary School to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment."
Meanwhile, efforts by the computer hacking group known as 'Anonymous' are allegedly attempting to take the Westboro Baptist Church website down through what is described as #OpWestBoro on Twitter. However, as of 8:30 EST, the church's website is still working. A YouTube video, purportedly from Anonymous, warns Westboro of being targeted by the hacktivists.
The Westboro Baptist Church has targeted Brevard County in the past with an announced plan to protest a serviceman's funeral and the Space Shuttle Endeavour launch. Local residents created a human shield to protect the funeral - but church protestors never appeared.
