Pro-Gay Protest At Viera Chick-fil-A Scheduled August 1
VIERA, Florida - The flaming debate that has enveloped around the Chick-fil-A fast food chain traditional family stance is about to get hotter.
A protest by the Space Coast Progressive Alliance is scheduled to take place at the Viera Chick-fil-A located at 8300 North Wickham Road in Viera, Florida, on August 1, 2012 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The political group's website says that: "In
support of our gay friends, neighbors, family and NOW members please
show up and hold a sign with us. Bring your own sign if you like – or
we’ll have some extras. This is sponsored by local PFLAG and they are
asking for a non-confrontational, peaceful protest. We really want to
show them that Brevard is a tolerant, supportive, enlightened town and
bigotry and hate are not allowed!"
The political controversy comes after remarks made by Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy to the Baptist Press
that, "We don't claim to be a Christian business ... But as an
organization we can operate on biblical principles ... We are very much
supportive of the family -- the biblical definition of the family unit."
Those statements have drawn outcries
from pro-homosexual groups along with boycott messages on Chick-fil-A's
facebook page. But right along with the detractors came messages of
support who called for a "boycott of the boycott" by going to to eat at
Chick-Fil-A.
"Thank you for standing against gay marriage. Wish more companies would follow your example," wrote one supporter.
An opponent wrote, "Every
company can follow any moral code they choose just as I can choose
never to eat at Chick-fil-A again just as I hope every other person will
do!"
