Evans, Deardoff Win Canaveral Port Authority Viewer Poll
PORT CANAVERAL, Florida -- Republican candidate
for Canaveral Port Authority - District 2, John "Hank" Evans (R), beat
incumbent Joe D. Matheny (D) in the Brevard Times viewer
poll, 65.4% to 34.6%, respectively.
At the center of controversy in this race is the Port Authority's imposition and later rescission of increased tolls on shuttle buses that transport cruise passengers from off-site parking lots and local area hotels to the cruise terminals.
At the center of controversy in this race is the Port Authority's imposition and later rescission of increased tolls on shuttle buses that transport cruise passengers from off-site parking lots and local area hotels to the cruise terminals.
Also related to the parking controversy is the degree of involvement at Canaveral Port Authority CEO Stanley Payne had in the development of a fictitious parking video that depicted off-site parking as unsafe and unreliable. Incumbents Matheny and Bruce Deardoff blocked a move by other Port Commissioners to terminate Payne earlier this month.
While the recent controversy may be helping Evans beat Matheny in straw polls, it does not appear to have the same effect in the District 4 race between Deardoff and Republican challenger Chuck Sheridan. Deardoff won the
Brevard Times viewer
poll against Sheridan 69.7%
to 30.3%, respectively.
Of the four viewer polls conducted by
Brevard Times so far, the results are in line with in-person straw polls conducted at political events in recent months.
Like a straw poll, the viewer poll is
unscientific and cannot be given any weight as to how voters will
actually vote come Election Day. However, it can indicate the level of
energy and enthusiasm political activists have for a particular
candidate.
Energy and enthusiasm is especially
important at this point in the county races such as Brevard County Commissioner, Clerk of Court,
Sheriff, Port Authority Commissioner, and Property Appraiser because the viewer poll can indicate the
number of campaign volunteers holding signs at voting precincts and
traffic intersections leading up to, and on Election Day.
A new Brevard Times' viewer poll, for Brevard County School Board and half-cent sales tax begins today.
