4 States' Petitions To Secede Meet Signature Requirement

Florida is among a majority of States that filed a Petition with the President of the United States to peacefully Secede from the United States of America at WhiteHouse.gov following the defeat of Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

According to WhiteHouse.gov, a Petition must have reached 25,000 signatures within 30 days in order to receive an official response from the White House.  The Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky, and Florida Petitions to Secede have already exceeded the 25,000 requirement within 3 days.

The State of Florida's Petition to Secede was the fourth state to reach the required 25,000 signatures shortly before 6 p.m. tonight.  Many of the signatures were from Brevard County, Florida which leaned heavily for Romney in the 2012 Presidential Election.  The Florida Petition gives the following reasons to Secede from the Union:

"Peacefully grant the State of Florida to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government.

We the people of the great state of Florida, do see that in today's world the Federal Government has not led our citizens justly and with honor.   We therefore as free men and women of our great state do believe that it is time to take matter upon ourselves to ensure our continued freedom, and to enact our own laws and here buy govern ourselves without the federal government's involvement in our internal matters from this day forward.

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Benjamin Franklin: 1775"

Among the Bill of Rights, the 1st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution provides:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances" (Emphasis added.)

A counter-petition titled "Deport Everyone That Signed A Petition To Withdraw Their State From The United States Of America." has also been filed with the White House."

Brevard Times has compiled links to each States' Petition to Secede in alphabetical order.  In some instances, there are similar or duplicate petitions filed with the White House, in which case the petition with the most signatures is listed:
